Summer play precautions: Heatstroke and skin care measures

Summer, when temperatures and humidity soar, is a season where the risks involved in SM play skyrocket.

With elevated heart rates from excitement and tension, restricted movement due to restraints, and the wearing of non-breathable outfits, SM play is full of elements that can cause body temperatures to spike. Furthermore, skin issues such as increased friction due to sweat frequently occur.

To enjoy SM play safely, we have compiled tips on "heatstroke prevention" and "skincare."

1. Prevent Life-Threatening "Heatstroke"

In many cases, by the time subjective symptoms of heatstroke appear, the condition has already become severe. During SM play in particular, sensations can easily become dulled for both partners, so it is crucial for the dominant partner to consciously manage hydration and room temperature.

・Plan your hydration before play begins

Replenish your body with water and electrolytes using oral rehydration solutions or sports drinks, not just during play, but starting 1 to 2 hours before you begin. Since the person being restrained cannot hydrate themselves, ensure they consume water at least every 15–20 minutes. It is difficult to judge their condition by skin color or body temperature during play, so make sure they hydrate thoroughly even if they do not feel thirsty. Room-temperature water or barley tea is recommended during play.

・Maintain a room temperature of 24–26°C

Aim for an air conditioner setting of 24–26°C, a temperature that feels "slightly chilly." Also, use a circulator or fan to ensure air is circulating and the entire room is cooled. Please avoid playing in rooms without air conditioning where heat can easily become trapped, as this is dangerous.

・Refrain from using gear that covers the mouth

Humans effectively release body temperature through respiration. Blocking the mouth completely with gags or bits hinders heat dissipation and makes it difficult to hydrate, increasing the risk of heatstroke. In the summer, we recommend keeping wear time extremely short or using ring gags with ventilation holes or open-mouth type gags.

2. Protecting skin from sweat and friction

Skin issues caused by sweat occur frequently in the summer.

Rubber, Leather, and PVC

  • Risk: These materials have very low breathability; sweat accumulates inside, which can lead to heat rash or contact dermatitis.

  • Countermeasure: Apply baby powder before wearing, insert towels or other moisture-absorbent materials, and avoid wearing them for extended periods. Wipe away sweat immediately after taking them off.

3. Aftercare: Thorough cool-down and moisturizing

After play has finished, be sure to cool down properly.

  1. Lower body temperature: Cool the neck and underarms with a cold towel or ice pack, and slowly replenish fluids with room-temperature or slightly cool water.

  2. Skin cleansing and moisturizing: Leaving sweat, sebum, or lotion on the skin can lead to bacterial growth. Rehydrate, then take a shower. When washing your body, use a mild body soap and wash gently. Don't forget to moisturize your skin as well. Using lotions or creams containing ceramide or hyaluronic acid will help the skin retain moisture.

  3. Gear maintenance: Sweat on leather products can cause mold and degradation. Wipe sweat off with a dry cloth and store the gear in a well-ventilated area away from direct sunlight.

Because SM play involves an altered sense of pain and sensation, you may become lax in recognizing heatstroke symptoms or complaints from your partner. Rather than playing "the same as always," practice "summer-spec" safe play.
